Bitumen for East Africa

Penetration grade 60/70 and 80/100 in drums, discharged at Mombasa and Dar es Salaam for the Northern and Central corridors.

The market

Two ports, and a long road behind them

East African road programmes are supplied through two gateways. Mombasa feeds the Northern Corridor into Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and eastern DR Congo. Dar es Salaam feeds the Central Corridor into Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and the Zambian copperbelt.

What matters commercially is that the sea leg is the short part of the journey. Cargo that discharges at Mombasa may still have 1,200 km of road ahead of it. That single fact decides the packing, and it is why drums dominate this market while jumbo bags do not.

Handling bitumen drums
Packing

Why drums win inland

They survive transhipment

A 180 kg drum is handled, restacked and hauled by road repeatedly before it reaches site. It takes that treatment. A jumbo bag handled the same way does not.

They break the load down

Drums let a contractor move bitumen to several sites from one container, which suits dispersed road works far better than a fixed-plant delivery.

They have a second life

Empty drums hold value on site across the region, which quietly offsets part of the landed cost.

Where the buyer runs a fixed asphalt plant near the port, 1 MT jumbo bags remain the cleaner option and are supplied on the same terms.

Compliance

Conformity assessment before shipment, not after

Kenya and Tanzania both operate pre-export conformity schemes — the Kenya Bureau of Standards PVoC programme and the Tanzania Bureau of Standards equivalent. Where a consignment falls within scope, a Certificate of Conformity has to be issued before the cargo sails. A shipment that arrives without one faces penalty charges, destination testing, and in the worst case refusal of entry.

We treat this as part of the loading process rather than as the buyer’s problem at the other end. Inspection is already taking place at the load port for quality and weight; conformity assessment is arranged alongside it when the destination requires it, and the certificate travels with the document set.

Documents to destination

  • Certificate of Analysis from the producing refinery
  • SGS Certificate of Quality and Certificate of Weight
  • Certificate of Origin, attested
  • Certificate of Conformity where the destination requires it
  • Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, MSDS
